January 2019
Dear Mom,
Since you don’t live in the twenty-first century, because you own neither a computer nor an email address, I will write this out for you by hand — but for now, I’m posting it here.
For 2019, my chosen word is VERVE. I love this word’s sound and synonyms: vivacity, enthusiasm, vitality, ebullience, sparkle, vigor, charisma, gusto, elan, relish, ardor, fire, buoyancy, zest, dynamism! I learned all these from you as I was growing up, but even more so, now. Although I’ll be so far away from you, I vow to live 2019 with as much verve as I can possibly conjure.
Thank you for such a beautifully complex and challenging holiday season that I shall always cherish.
Thank you for giving birth to me in the City of Angels.
Thank you for raising me in Hollywood, where you took me to bookstores and libraries, and where I found — when I was about 11 years old — a book you hadn’t read, called Anne of Green Gables, which led to countless hours imagining what life might be like on the other side of this continent.
Now I don’t have to imagine it. I’m about to go back home, to Halifax.
Love from LAX,
Your Daughter
