For all of my lovely friends and colleagues with whom I’ve reconnected recently through social media, this post is for you . . .
The short answer: I’m now a Research Associate at the University of Nairobi’s Institute for Development Studies, with the purpose of conducing the field work for my PhD dissertation – tentatively titled “The Future of Coffee: Climate Resilience & Gender Equity in Kenya’s Coffee Chain.”
I will also be comparing Kenya’s coffee chain with its East African neighbors, especially Rwanda, and I hope all of this one day will become a book.
I remain a PhD candidate at Saint Mary’s University, in Halifax, Nova, Scotia, Canada – which remains my “home base” (although for those of you who know me, if I have a Real Home on Earth, it’s in my native beloved California).
But why I am here means far more to me than even my PhD research.
My first summer in Kenya was in 1994, and what happened to me back then, and how it changed me forever after, is a much longer story to share in the coming months.
If you’re wondering about my older son, Ethan, check out his website “Down Wapiti Music Group” and download his new, first album, “To Gallery a Cloud Ground,” on Itunes or Spotify!
And yes, my younger son is here in Kenya with me!
